Safety and Security Are Top Priorities

June 20, 2023

When I took office in November 2021, I was determined to support and improve our public safety agencies. This passion for public safety is not new for me. Safety and security have always been one of my top priorities. Each of our public safety agencies, our police, our fire, our emergency management office, and our ambulance have my focus and determination. When I first took office, our police officers ran for over a year without a contract. Three months later, their contract was in place, and they were, and are, grateful for the immediate support they received. We’ve collaborated with our school’s resource officer and renewed our DUI grant program to get drunk drivers off our roads. We partnered with our Recreation Department to combat bad actors at our beach and other public areas and consistently work in town to slow down drivers on our roads. Our Firefighters paid and volunteers, have stepped up to the plate to coordinate efforts to form a joint department to do what they do best – coordinate our first responding efforts for fire and other emergencies around town. They’ve saved many homes and provided life-saving rescues on land and in our waterways as of late, responding to many calls. Our career Firefighters |EMTs have answered hundreds of calls daily to help our citizens during health emergencies supplementing our East Haddam Ambulance Association and the remarkable volunteers who take care of night and weekend health emergencies.

Emergency Management has been instrumental in all these efforts ensuring our radio response and equipment are up to par. Also, our team was instrumental during our COVID response with PPE and COVID test kit disbursement. With COVID waning, we are no less busy. These days, we’re working to be ready for possible storm response now that we’ve entered our hurricane season. We’ll remain steadfast in ensuring our community is well cared for in emergencies. And I want to thank all our first responders for their selfless work. I also extend a special thank you to their families! Emergencies do not wait for regular business hours or convenient times, and the families of our first responders make huge sacrifices as their loved ones are often absent from family gatherings on nights and weekends, as they work to save our residents when they are in need.
